Jade Donaldson: Celebration of His Life

From today's edition of the Gloucester Daily Times, including partial obituary and arrangements:

"Jade was passionate about baseball and took pride in his 30-year involvement with the Rockport Townies and Inter-Town League Baseball. As a player, coach, and eventual general manager of the Townies, he helped build the team into a league powerhouse that won numerous championships. Although he took the game seriously, Jade always made it fun, which was why his players loved playing for him. Off the field, he served on various league committees, raised funds for uniforms and equipment, and even designed the lobster logo for the Townies ball caps. Jade rarely missed a game, and later in life he could be found every Sunday of the summer at Evan Field in Rockport, his beloved dog Coco by his side, taking in the game and enjoying a cigar. This was his idea of the perfect way to spend an evening. For his dedication and contributions, Jade was inducted into the I.T.L. Hall of Fame in 2006."

ARRANGEMENTS: A memorial service to celebrate Jade's life will be held at the Elks at Bass Rocks, 97-101 Atlantic Road, Gloucester, on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008 from 1 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Jade Donaldson Memorial Scholarship Fund, Rockport High School Guidance Office, c/o George Ramsden, 24 Jerdens Lane, Rockport, MA 01966; and the VNA Care Network and Hospice, 5 Federal St., Danvers, MA 01923. Funeral arrangements are by the Burgess and Mackey Funeral Home, 201 Main St., Rockport.

ITL, Townies Mourn Loss of Long-Time Friend

The ITL lost an important figure on Tuesday, as Jade Donaldson of Rockport passed away after an extended illness. Jade wore many hats for the Townies and the ITL - as the starting second baseman for the 1980 ITL championship team, later as the Townies' manager and ITL executive, and most recently as President of the Rockport Townies. After decades of dedication to the team, Jade was recognized as the unquestioned heart and soul of the Townies. Visit http://www.gloucestertimes.com/ in the coming days for arrangements.

Robertson, Townies Walk-Off Winners

The Rockport Townies won their 3rd straight ITL title in dramatic fashion last night at Evans Field. Tom Robertson was the hero as he delivered a 2-out, 2 strike double to right field in the bottom of the seventh inning. The clutch hit scored two runs as the Townies would take the game, and title, by the score of 8-7. The Generals took a 7-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh where the Townies would score 5 to take the game.

The Generals scored in each of the first four innings as they got out to a 5-0 lead. Bryan Vitale knocked in 3 of the 5 himself with an RBI single in the first and a 2-HR in the third. Reggie Maidment also delivered an RBI single. The Townies fought back by scoring 3 in the fourth to make the score 5-3. 5 straight singles led to the 3 runs. Spittle got the fifth one that scored two.

In the sixth the Generals got 2 more without recording a hit making the score 7-3 going into the seventh. The stage was set for the dramatic comeback. Back-to-Back doubles to start the inning from Anderson and Currier scored the first run. Two outs and 3-walks later the Townies worked the bases loaded and were down one run. Funchion, who gutted out the game thus far was certainly fatigued but needed only one out to end the game. Robertson then delivered the heroics and Evans Field claimed yet another victim. A great game all around to end a great 2007 season. Congratulations Rockport Townies, and the rest of the league for putting together one of the more fantastic and competitive seasons in recent memory.

See you next season!

Game 2: Townies 6 - Generals 1

The Rockport Townies won game 2 in a very close game for most of the day. Adam Orlando earned the win in game two going 7 strong innings. Jeff Jensen pitched six but tired in the seventh, and was charged with the loss.

In the top of the first the Rockport Townies put together a run with two out and no one on. Brent Currier got hit with a pitch, Orlando followed with a double. Chris Bouchie got an RBI infield dribbler that was placed perfectly. That one run stood all the way to the seventh inning. The Generals threatened many times but failed to deliver the one big hit. Hamilton stranded ten runners on the day as Orlando got all the big outs he needed.

In the seventh the Townies got to Jensen for 5 runs. Brent Currier delivered a 3-run HR and Chris Bouchie hit a two run shot, both to left. The Generals got something going in the bottom of the seventh but a Jim Maloney sac-fly resulted in the only run for the home team. The Townies take a commanding 2-0 in the best of five series, game three will be Wednesday night in Rockport. 5:45pm start.

Game 1: Generals 5 - Townies 9

Game 1 of the 2007 ITL Finals went to the Rockport Townies by the score of 9-5. It was a well fought game on both sides, both pitchers battling the entire way. Brent Currier went the distance for the Townies to record the win. Judd Funchion also pitched a great six innings, but the Townies got to him for one big inning that made the difference in the game.

The Generals got on the board first in the third inning. Mark Provost hit a solo HR to center for the game's first run. Jered Stewart followed with a long double to left. Bryan Vitale brought Stewart in on an RBI single giving the Generals a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth the Townies tied the game at 2-2. Bouchie led off with a single, followed by a Brock Currier double into the trees. Jeremy Spittle then delivered a 2-RBI single down the third base line to tie the game. The Townies continued to roll as they poured it on in the fifth, sending 11 men to the plate. Adam Orlando hit a 2-Run HR into the center field trees. Justin Paradis also hit an RBI single. Anderson then added a 2-RBI single with the bases loaded, the Townies got one more on a Brent Currier hit. When the dust settled, the Townies took an 8-2 lead.

The Generals came right back with 3 runs in the sixth. Justin Tilley brought Jones home with a double into the trees. Reggie Maidment brought Tilley home on a single. Jim Maloney then scored Maidment with a double down the line making the score 8-5. The Generals couldn't get any closer as the Townies added an insurance run in the sixth. Currier retired the side in the seventh with some help of a game ending double play. No damage was done, and the Townies take game one. Game 2 is Sunday afternoon at Patton Park, 2pm start.
