Topsfield 4 - Manchester/Essex 8

On Tuesday night the M-E Mariners overcame a 4 run deficit to gain their 3rd victory of the season, and even their record to 3-3. The Tories of Topsfield jumped out of the gate quickly with 4 runs in the top of the 1st inning on hits by Matt Rogers, Ben Hathaway, Dave Galugi, and a 2 run homer by Travis Luongo. After the first inning, Mariners starting pitcher Ryan Marques settled down well and pitched 5 shutout innings after that to gain the victory, with Mike Gibbon pitching a perfect 7th including 2 strikeouts. Matt Rogers suffered the loss for Topsfield.

The Mariners got one run in the bottom of the 3rd on a double from Joe Orlando, and base hits from Bryan Lafata and Charlie Choate. The bottom of the 5th was when the Mariner bats came alive, leading the inning off were Nate Bertolino and Charlie Choate with back to back homers to bring the Mariners within one. With a couple walks, a hit batsmen, an error and sac fly the Mariners were able to tack on 3 more runs in the inning to secure the lead.

The Tories were led at the plate by Luongo (2-4 w/hr, 2rbi), and Hathaway (2-3 w/2b, run scored). The Mariners were led by 4 & 5 hitters Bertolino (2-4, hr) and Choate (2-2 w/hr, 2 rbi, bb). Christian Maki in his debut with the Mariners scored 2 runs.

The Tories and Mariners meet again this Friday, June 15th at Proctor Field. First pitch is slated for 5:45pm.
