George A. "Mike" Singer - Ipswich Chiefs ITL HOF


Ipswich - George A. "Mike" Singer, 92, passed peacefully on Sunday, June 5, 2022. Mike was born in Ipswich on November 18, 1929, the youngest of six children born to John and Mabel Singer. A graduate of Ipswich High School class of 1947, Mike married Clara Belanger on his 21st birthday in 1950. Mike played baseball in the Brooklyn Dodgers organization before and after his Army service during the Korean Conflict.

During many of his adult years, Mike played baseball for the Ipswich Chiefs and softball with the Over 30 Softball League. When his playing days ended, his love of the game led him to years of umpiring baseball and then softball well into his 70s.
Mike ran the family business John A. Singer and Sons with his brother John until his retirement in 1988 after which he and Clara spent a number of years wintering in Stuart, Florida, where they made many dear friends. After Clara's passing in 2001, Mike moved to and enjoyed living at Cable Gardens in Ipswich until earlier this year. Mike had a community of close friends at Cable Gardens who showed him great kindness and support as he sought to maintain his independence.

Mike was a lifelong communicant of St. Joseph's/Our Lady of Hope Church. He was a longstanding member of VFW Post 1093 and the Knights of Columbus. Mike was inducted into to Ipswich High School Hall of Fame in 2015 for football, basketball, and baseball.

Mike is survived by his two daughters Deborah Singer of Stoughton, Susan Singer of Salem who provided loving care to him over the past 18 months; and his son Michael Singer of Amesbury. He is also survived by his granddaughter Kacey Houston Walker and her husband Jacob Walker; grandson Geoffrey Ferguson and the apple of his eye; great-grandson Theodore "Teddy" Walker. Mike leaves behind nieces, nephews, and countless devoted friends.
Mike was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Clara; his siblings Roland, Bertha, Kathleen, Virginia and John; brothers and sisters-in-law and sidekicks Charlie and Claire DeGrandpre.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, June 11, at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Hope Church, 54 Linebrook Road, Ipswich. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to visiting hours on Friday, June 10, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Morris Funeral Home, 45 North Main Street, Ipswich. Burial with military honors will be held in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, 29 Town Farm Road, Ipswich.
