Topsfield rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Hamilton by a score of 4-2 on Thursday
night at Patton Park. Chris Costa went the distance, striking out nine
for the win. Matt Greeke went 6.1 innings for Hamilton and fanned 11
Tories, but was the tough luck loser.
The Tories took a 1-0 lead in the 4th. BJ Weed led off with a
single, was balked to second and scored on a single by Nahigian. The
Generals answered in the bottom half. Jim Maloney led off with a double
to the gap in left-center. Bryan Vitale advanced the runner with a
good piece of two-strike hitting that resulted in a ground out. With
two outs, Mark Ruggiero muscled a flair into right-center to tie the
game. After a passed ball advanced Ruggiero, Mike Chandler pounded a
double to right-center to put the Generals up by a run.
The 2-1 score held steady as Greeke cruised through the first six.
In the seventh. Costa led off with a single. Max Travers sacrificed
Costa to second and the throw to get Costa at second was thrown away,
putting runners at second and third with nobody out. Andrew Dyer then
hit a dribbler down the third base line to tie the game, which he also
beat out for a hit. After Heath walked to load the bases and a
strikeout was recorded, Weed had the biggest hit of the night as he
dropped a two-run single into left to give the Tories a 4-2 lead and
ultimately the win.
Weed, Nagigian and Costa each had two hits for Topsfield. Chandler had two hits for Hamilton. The two teams play again Friday night at the Proctor School.
