Mariners win ITL crown on Tucker complete game shutout

Mariners win ITL crown on Tucker complete game shutout
By Nick Curcuru

ESSEX  — The Intertown Twilight Baseball League championship is back in a familiar place.

After Saturday's 5-0 win in Game 4 of the best of 5 ITL Finals, the Manchester Essex Mariners topped the Hamilton Generals to clinch their second league crown in three years and seventh in the last 10 years.

The Mariners, who also made their 10th straight appearance in the ITL Finals, got it done with a bit of a re-tooled lineup this spring as several veterans stepped aside and several younger players stepped in to fill the void.

One constant over the team's 10-year run, however, has been left-handed pitcher Rusty Tucker. The 41-year-old flame thrower picked up the win in Saturday's decisive game, tossing his second shutout victory of the series, going the distance while striking out 10 and allowing three hits.

"It's funny my arm feels great but it's the rest of my body that's sore (after these games)," Tucker said after the series clinching shutout. "But I still got enough left in the tank to get through these, let's see how long I can do this.

Our make-up is a little different this year with some veterans players gone but we have some really good young players that stepped up and played great all year."

The Mariners, who won five straight ITL crowns from 2012-16 along with wins in 2019 and 2021, essentially put the game away in their first at bat with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Back-to-back fielding errors allowed Caulin Rogers to come in with the game's first run. Kellen Field then lined a double to deep center scoring his brother, E.J. Field, to make it 2-0 Mariners. Tucker followed and helped out his own cause with a base hit up the middle plating Kellen Field for a 3-0 Mariners lead before recording an out in inning.

Manchester Essex picked up another run in the bottom of the second when Cory Burnham came in on a wild pitch after leading off the inning with a walk. Burnham also drove in the final run of the game with a RBI single in the bottom of the sixth scoring Manny Morato, who doubled, to make it 5-0.

"The early run support really helped," Tucker said. "We swung the bats well all series and it was big to bounce back after getting shut down in Game 3. We put together some good at bats and we were able to push those runs across."

The four runs was more than enough support for Tucker, who allowed only four baserunners on the game and never allowed one to reach third base.

He got through a strong Generals lineup with his usual stuff, a heavy fastball that was all over the strike zone. But on Saturday Tucker also had a strong curveball, which he used to keep Hamilton off balance.

"That's a good lineup with a good approach that has already seen me once this series," Tucker said. "So it was big to have a good curve today. They had some good at bats late, a couple hard hit balls but my fastball location was there for most of the game."

Hamilton's Carter Coffey also pitched well in defeat. The tall right hander came in with nobody out in the first inning and three runs already in before settling things down. While the Mariners had a hit in every inning, Coffey kept them from pulling away, allowing two runs in six innings of work on six hits.

Jake Lanciani had two of Hamilton's three hits with Paul Horgan getting the other. Kellen Field, E.J. Field and Burnham all had two hits each to pace the Mariners offense.

STAYING ALIVE: Generals fight off elimination with McLintock Game 3 shutout

By Nick Curcuru Staff writer

HAMILTON — The Hamilton Generals live to fight another day.

Down two games to none to the Manchester Essex Mariners in the best-of-five Intertown Twilight Baseball League Finals, right handed pitcher Luke McLintock threw a complete-game, one-hit shutout in a 2-0 Generals win at Patton Park.

With the win, Hamilton trails the Mariners, 2-1 in the series, but survived to see a Game 4 on Saturday at Memorial Field in Essex (4 p.m.).

"It was a great performance from Luke," Generals manager Brian Nicoll said. "He battled when we needed him the most. He's a young kid but he attacked every hitter and he was so efficient."

The 2021 Hamilton-Wenham High School graduate who'll be pitching for Babson next year needed only 80 pitches to get through one of the ITL's best lineups. McLintock pounded the strike zone, striking out five and limiting hard hit balls.

The Mariners only hit was a first inning single from E.J. Field. From there the Mariners only had five more baserunners with McLintock retiring 11 out of 12 batters from the second to the sixth innings.

Mariners starter Zach Abbott was also up to the task in Wednesday's game. The 2021 Gloucester High School graduate tossed 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits and four strikeouts.

The Generals got to Abbott in the fourth with the heart of their order coming through. Hunter Wilichoski had a one out single and Will Frain followed with a ground-rule double on a lined shot to left. Harrison O'Brien followed with a fly ball to center, deep enough to get Wilichoski home with what turned out to be the game winning run.

"Frain and Wilichoski are so tough to get out," Nicoll said. "I don't know many teams in this league that have that combination of those kind of ball players in the middle of the lineup. And O'Brien had a good at bat behind them to get the run in."

Hamilton added another in the sixth. Paul Horgan and Frain singled to put runners on the corners with two outs in the inning. The Mariners went to staff ace Rusty Tucker, who appeared to have Frain picked off at first base. But Horgan broke for home, drawing a throw from the first baseman that sailed to the backstop allowing a run to score and giving the Generals a 2-0 lead.

McLintock saw two runners get on base in the top of the seventh on a walk and a fielder's choice, but he got two groundouts and a strikeout looking to finish it off, leaving the tying runs in scoring position and extending the series.

The Mariners polished off a big weekend to open the best-of-five series against the top-seeded Hamilton Generals, taking both of the weekend games to open up a two-game lead in the series. Manchester Essex can clinch the ITL title with a win in Game 3 on Wednesday at Patton Park in Hamilton (5:30 p.m.). Hamilton, on the other hand, must win three straight games to capture its first title since 1992.

The Mariners got the weekend started with an 8-0 win in Game 1 on Saturday and followed it up with an 8-4 victory in Game 2 on Sunday.

"Everyone is seeing the ball well right now and we put together some good at bats over the first two games," Mariner manager Ryan Marques said. "It was a good weekend for us, we did what we needed to do on Saturday and Sunday."

The offense powered the Mariners to the win in Game 2 as the team belted 14 hits and came back from a slim, early deficit to take control of the series.

Trailing 4-3 after three innings, the Mariners went on to score five unanswered runs over their final four at bats to pull away.

Third baseman James McKenna, who went 4-for-4 on the afternoon, tied the game by singling in Kellen Field, who walked, to make it 4-4. Dylan Wilson scored what turned out to be the game winning run, coming in from third on an errant pickoff throw to first to give the Mariners at 5-4 lead.

The Mariners tacked onto that lead with a run in the fifth on a Caulin Rogers RBI single scoring Alex Ray. They put the game away in the sixth when Lars Arntsen singled in McKenna and then came in to score on a Ray single to cap the scoring at 8-4.

Field got the win on the mound for the Mariners, tossing 4 1/3 scoreless innings. He came on in the third with two runners on base and got out of the jam, then held the Generals offense in check for the next four innings, allowing only two hits while striking out three.

"Kellen really settled things down for us and shut them down," Marques said. "Hamilton is a good hitting team and they were swinging the bats well early but he came in and got some big outs."

The Mariners took a 2-0 lead right away in the first when Cory Burnham singled in E.J. Field (single) and then McKenna singled in Kellen Field. The Generals, however, got three in the top of the second to take the lead on RBI hits from Harrison O'Brien, Paul Horgan and Chris Huggett to make it 3-2.

The Mariners tied it up in the bottom of the frame on a Wilson RBI single, but the Generals went right back ahead, 4-3 on a base hit from Sal Guarino.

Manchester Essex got the series started with a shutout victory in Game 1 on Saturday, its third straight postseason win via shutout.

Rusty Tucker quieted the Generals bats, tossing six innings of shutout ball and striking out 12. Marcus Montagnino had four hits to lead the offense while Kellen Field added three and Cory Burnham had a multi-hit game.

The Mariners were in control from the jump by opening up a 5-0 lead after three and cruising through the second half of the game.

FINALS SET Generals take down Townies to advance to ITL Finals

HAMILTON — The Hamilton Generals are heading to a place the team has not been since 2007: The Intertown Twilight Baseball League Finals.

The top-seeded Generals clinched a berth in the championship series with a wire-to-wire 8-2 win over the Rockport Townies in a winner-take-all Game 3 on Wednesday night at Patton Park.

With the win, the Generals will take on the Manchester Essex Mariners in the ITL Finals. The best-of-five series opens up on Saturday at Patton Park in Hamilton (4 p.m.) with Game 2 switching to Memorial Field in Essex on Sunday (4 p.m.). Game 3 will be back at Patton Park on Wednesday (5:30 p.m.) and, if necessary, Game 4 will be next Saturday at Memorial Field and Game 5 next Sunday at Patton Park. The Generals are looking for their first ITL crown since 1992. The Mariners, on the other hand, are playing in their 10th straight ITL Finals and last won a league title in 2019.

Hamilton, which won Game 1 of the series and dropped Game 2, jumped out to a 2-0 in its first at-bat and never looked back.

Cam Vatour led off the contest with a single and later came around to score on a two-out base knock from Harrison O’Brien, who then stole second and scored on a Larry Saggese single.

The Townies immediately cut that lead in half with Jameson Kamm scoring on a wild pitch after leading off the frame with a double and eventually scoring on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.

But that was as close as Rockport would get as Hamilton finished strong with six runs in its final three at-bats.

The Generals scored what turned out to be the winning run in the bottom of the fourth when Chris Huggett came in on an error to make it 3-1. Carter Coffey later came in on a Vatour grounder and starting pitcher Ryan Hutchinson scored on a Hunter Wilichoski RBI single to give the Generals a commanding 5-1 lead.

That lead was enough for Hamilton’s pitchers. Ryan Hutchinson picked up the win, allowing a run in four innings of work, striking out one and allowing only four hits. Carter Coffey finished it off allowing a run in three innings of relief. His biggest outs came in the top of the sixth when Rockport put the first two batters on with singles from Joe Muzio and Kyle Nelson. But Coffey answered by striking out the side to keep his team well ahead.

Rockport got a run back in the top of the fifth when Jack Sperry singled in Jake Engel (single) to make it 5-2. The Generals, however, had an answer again with two more runs in the bottom of the frame with RBI’s from Ian Coffey on a fielder’s choice and Vatour with a base hit. Horgan scored on a bases loaded walk in the sixth to cap the scoring at 8-2.

Vatour and Horgan led the way for the Generals with two hits each. Kamm had three hits to lead the Townies.

Mariners shut out defending ITL champs to advance to finals

For the 10th season in a row, the Manchester Essex Mariners are bound for the Intertown Twilight Baseball League Finals. The Mariners clinched a 10th straight appearance on Tuesday night with an 8-0 win over the defending champion Rowley Rams, sweeping the best of three semifinal series.

"We played some good baseball this series," Mariners manager Ryan Marques said. "Pitching and defense was great and we got the hits when we needed too, especially tonight."

The pitching was stellar for the Mariners as they allowed no runs in the series sweep. Right hander Dylan Wilson picked up the series clinching win with a complete game shutout, allowing only four hits while sitting down the final 10 batters of the game. Wilson had only two strikeouts but the Mariners played error free defense behind him and there were very few hard hit balls.

The win came after Rusty Tucker tossed a complete game shutout in a 1-0 Mariners win in Game 1.

Manchester Essex opened up the scoring in the top of the second when Bennett O'Leary scored on a fielding error and Cory Burnham later came in on a James McKenna sacrifice fly after reaching on a single to make it 2-0.

Burnham's ground ball to second plated Marcus Montagnino (3-for-4, 3 runs) in the third to make it 3-0, and the Mariners added two more in the fifth on a Montagnino RBI double and an O'Leary sacrifice fly to extend the edge to 5-0.

E.J. Field scored on a fielding error in the sixth and then Kellen Field doubled in Montagnino in the seventh, later coming around to score on a wild pitch to cap the scoring at 8-0.

The Mariners never got more than two runs in an inning, but they were all over the basepaths and delivered with runners on base.

"We didn't have any huge innings but we got extra base hits which was key," Marques said. "It took us a little bit to adjust but after the first time through we put together a lot of good swings."

The Mariners now turn their attention to the best-of-five ITL finals, which will begin on Saturday against the winner of Wednesday's Game 3 between the top-seeded Hamilton Generals and the Rockport Townies. If the Generals win, the Mariners will be in Hamilton for Game 1. If the Townies win, the Mariners will host Game 1.

"It's going to be a good series no matter who it is," Marques said. "Rockport has rebuilt their team a little bit this year and are playing well and Hamilton won the regular season."

Townies fight off elimination with seventh inning rally, tie ITL semfinals

Townies fight off elimination with seventh inning rally, tie ITL semfinals
By Nick Curcuru

The Rockport Townies were three outs away from elimination in Monday's ITL Semifinal. The Townies trailed top-seeded Hamilton by three runs heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, losing momentum after scoring six unanswered runs to tie the game in the fifth.

The Townies, however, had another comeback in them. Rockport scored four times without recording an out in the bottom of the seventh inning, a dropped fly ball off the bat of Jack Sperry scoring Jameson Kamm with the running run to walk off with a wild 11-10 win at Evans Field.

"There was just a never say die attitude with these guys," Rockport's Keady Segel said. "We just stuck to playing the way we play, going station to station and we were able to chip away at their lead twice."

With the Townies win, the best-of-three series is tied, 1-1 with the winner-take-all Game 3 on Wednesday at Patton Park in Hamilton (5:30 p.m.). Wednesday's winner will advance to the ITL finals against the winner of the other semifinal series between the Manchester Essex Mariners and Rowley Rams. The Mariners currently lead that series, 1-0 with Game 2 on Tuesday night at Eiras Park in Rowley (5:30 p.m.)

Trailing 10-7 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Rockport saw six straight batters reach base safely with four of them coming around to score. Frew Rowen led off the inning with a walk and Charlie MacDowell was then hit by a pitch. Jake Engel loaded the bases with an infield single on a grounder between the pitcher and shortstop.

Jameson Kamm came up with the bases loaded and drew a walk on a lengthy at bat to plate Rowen to make it 10-8. Zach Morris followed by lacing a double down the line in right to score both MacDowell and Engel to tie it up, 10-10.

Facing elimination a mere moments ago, the Townies all of sudden put the winning run at third base with nobody out in the inning. Sperry then came up and hit a fly ball to left that was dropped, allowing Kamm, who was tagging up if the ball was caught, to score the winning run.

"Everyone just took what was given to them and didn't try to do too much," Segel said. "Hamilton has a deep pitching staff and we put together some really tough at bats against them."

Derick MacDowell earned the win, allowing four runs in four inning of relief. All four of those runs came in the sixth inning as the Generals took a 10-6 lead directly after Rockport tied the score in the previous half inning. Harrison O'Brien and Larry Saggese both had two RBI singles in the inning. MacDowell responded with a one-two-three top of the seventh to keep his team within striking distance in the bottom of the frame.

The Generals, who won Game 1 by a score of 7-0 and are the top seed in the playoffs, looked to be on their way to a rout early on by scoring the game's first six runs.

Phil Horgan delivered a first inning solo home run and Hamilton plated five more in the second with Horgan and O'Brien delivering with big hits.

Rockport, however, chipped away at that lead with two runs in the second, one in the third, two more in the fourth and another in the fifth to tie it back up. Joe Muzio, Sperry, Ethan Tanson and Kamm had run scoring hits while Segel tied the score, just beating a tag at home plate on a wild pitch.
