The Rockport Townies won their 3rd straight ITL title in dramatic fashion last night at Evans Field. Tom Robertson was the hero as he delivered a 2-out, 2 strike double to right field in the bottom of the seventh inning. The clutch hit scored two runs as the Townies would take the game, and title, by the score of 8-7. The Generals took a 7-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh where the Townies would score 5 to take the game.
The Generals scored in each of the first four innings as they got out to a 5-0 lead. Bryan Vitale knocked in 3 of the 5 himself with an RBI single in the first and a 2-HR in the third. Reggie Maidment also delivered an RBI single. The Townies fought back by scoring 3 in the fourth to make the score 5-3. 5 straight singles led to the 3 runs. Spittle got the fifth one that scored two.
In the sixth the Generals got 2 more without recording a hit making the score 7-3 going into the seventh. The stage was set for the dramatic comeback. Back-to-Back doubles to start the inning from Anderson and Currier scored the first run. Two outs and 3-walks later the Townies worked the bases loaded and were down one run. Funchion, who gutted out the game thus far was certainly fatigued but needed only one out to end the game. Robertson then delivered the heroics and Evans Field claimed yet another victim. A great game all around to end a great 2007 season. Congratulations Rockport Townies, and the rest of the league for putting together one of the more fantastic and competitive seasons in recent memory.
See you next season!
