A well pitched game on both sides ended up going to the Mariners tonight. Gibbon pitched a complete game to earn the win. He scattered 7 hits and struck out 3. Jeff Jensen pitched well but was charged with the loss.
Reggie Maidment started the scoring in the third inning with a two-run home run. The Mariners answered in the bottom half with 2 of their own. Corey Hildonen got an RBI single, and Gentile added a sacrifice fly to left to tie the game at 2. In the bottom of the sixth, up by one run, the Mariners got a huge hit off the bat of Choate. A 3-run HR just out of the reach of the centerfielder gave the Mariners a 6-2 lead going into the 7th.
With 2-outs in the top of the seventh, the Generals tried to mount a comeback. A Jim Maloney double scored Maidment from first. Andre Painchaud then delivered an RBI single. With the tying run on first Gibbon was able to settle down and induce a pop-up from Vitale that ended the game. The Generals fell just short and the Mariners where able to close out a competitive game. Depending on how things end up, the two teams could meet again in the ITL playoffs. The regular season rematch will be Thursday night in Hamilton, 5:45pm start.
