On Tuesday night the Manchester-Essex Mariners rallied to beat the Topsfield Tories 10-9 in Essex. The win improves the Mariners to 6-0 and drops the Tories to 2-2 on the young season.
The Tories jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first 2 ½ innings, led by 2 solo home runs by leadoff hitter Andrew Dyer (4-4 on the day with a double, 3 rbi, and an intentional walk). Also leading the Tories on Tuesday night was Zach Lampkin going 3-5 w/2 runs scored, cleanup hitter Lobdell (3-4, 2 2b’s,2r), and Dave Gallugi (3-4, 2b, r, rbi). Starting pitcher, MacCarthy, threw 5 innings on the hill giving up 5 runs (4 earned), with 3 strikeouts and 6 bases on balls. MacCarthy gave way to Evan Bunker who went 1+ innings giving up 5 runs (only 2 earned), 3 bb’s and 4 hits.
Steve Stout picked up his 3rd win of the season with 6 innings of relief, giving up 5 runs (4 earned), 4k’s, 4bb’s, and 10 hits. The Mariners rallied for 5 runs in the final 2 innings to win. Bryan Lafata’s walk off single with no outs and the bases loaded plated Bob Whynott for the win in the bottom of the 7th inning. The Mariners were led at the plate by Mike Cain (2-3, 3b, hr, 5 rbi), Rory Gentile (2-3, 2bb, hr, r, rbi). Joe Orlando and Rick Bettencourt were on base numerous times with both scoring a couple of runs.
The two teams meet again Friday night at Proctor Field in Topsfield (5:45 start).
